Jammu, September 23: The clashes between security forces and terrorists that broke out on September 21 in Gurinar village in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir entered its third day on Monday.

Police said a joint search operation launched by security forces near the Dannadar forest area upstream of Gurinar village continued and firing resumed after contact was established. The two sides exchanged fire.

The operation began after a joint team of police and security forces received information about the presence of terrorists in the area.

Recently, there have been a series of clashes between terrorists and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, in which many terrorists and their commanders were eliminated. Security forces also suffered casualties.

Terrorist activities, which were initially restricted to Poonch and Rajouri districts, are now spreading to other parts of Jammu that were relatively free of such incidents until a few years ago, such as the Chenab Valley, which was declared militant-free, and the U.S. Dampur and Kathua.

Well-trained terrorists have been ambushing vehicles, using grenades, armor-piercing rounds and M4 assault rifles.

The rising militancy and use of advanced weapons by terrorists points to a significant escalation in the threat level, sources said. Frequent attacks have sparked political criticism, calls for stronger security measures and heightened public concern.

Analysts say there has been a surge in militancy in the past few years in the Pir Panja region of the Kashmir valley that separates Jammu.

The ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Kashmir have forced terrorists to hide in the mountains, waiting for opportunities to launch attacks on security forces.
