Yahya Sinwar: From the “Butcher of Yunus Khan” to the October 7 attacks

Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of the October 7 attack on Israel, was appointed chief of Hamas in August. Earlier, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an explosion in Iran.

Sinwar, born in 1962, was an early member of Hamas, which was founded in 1987. Sinwar leads the militant group’s security services and works to purge Israeli spies from the group.

Sinwar was arrested by Israel in the late 1980s. Sinwar murdered 12 suspected accomplices and confessed to it after his arrest. Therefore, Sinwar became known as the “Butcher of Yunus Khan”. Ultimately, Sinwar was sentenced to four life sentences. This also included the killing of two Israeli personnel.

  • Sinwar organizes protests to improve prison working conditions and learn about Hebrew and Israeli society.
  • In 2008, Sinwar recovered from brain cancer after being treated by Israeli doctors.
  • In 2011, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released Sinwar from prison in exchange for an Israeli soldier captured by Hamas in a cross-border raid.

Sinwar is believed to have planned the surprise attack on Israel on October 7 with Mohammed Deif, the leader of the Hamas armed wing. 1,200 Israelis were killed in the attack, most of them civilians. Since then, Israeli attacks on Palestine have killed more than 40,000 civilians.
