After ten years, Delhi has a female chief minister. Aatish has become the new chief minister of Delhi. Aatish was sworn in as the chief minister on Saturday. Before the swearing-in ceremony, Aatish reached Arvind Kejriwal’s house from where she and Arvind Kejriwal took the same car to Raj Nivas for the swearing-in ceremony. After the oath, Aatish touched Kejriwal’s feet and took his blessings, and then the two ended the swearing-in ceremony together. After becoming the chief minister, Aatish called on the people of Delhi to re-appoint Arvind Kejriwal as the chief minister in the next election.

Chief Minister Atish’s tenure will be short as the assembly elections are due in Delhi next year. In this context, Atishi and his cabinet ministers have a long list of pending projects, schemes and new initiatives to be launched in the coming months ahead of the assembly elections due early next year. Atishi will have to work at the grassroots level to speed up the functioning of the municipality and ensure that major projects and schemes that were delayed for months due to the jailing of predecessor Arvind Kejriwal get back on track.

Atishi faces many challenges

In fact, with Kejriwal in judicial custody for five months in the GST policy case, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is facing a cash crunch and is unable to address issues related to basic services and infrastructure, including roads, water supply, sewerage and medicines. As party leaders claim, the AAP is struggling. Atish will have to deal with these and more during his brief tenure. Apart from this, they will also have to fulfil Kejriwal’s promise to provide Rs 1,000 honorarium to eligible women in Delhi under the proposed Chief Minister’s Mahila Samman Yojana.

Challenges in implementing these plans

Officials said the biggest tasks ahead of them are allocating portfolios among ministers in consultation with the party, holding a meeting for appointments to important Group A posts in the National Capital Civil Service Service, reviving the doorstep service scheme, which includes approval for Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy 2.0, Solar Policy, etc. The new chief minister will also attend busy meetings to expedite pending work on welfare schemes and infrastructure projects related to roads, water supply, sewerage, pollution, subsidy distribution and wage revision for unorganised sector workers, PTI reported.

Officials said Atishi’s biggest challenge is to build a good rapport with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, whose approval is needed for all administrative functions of the Delhi government as well as development works. He said projects and plans like inauguration of mohalla clinics and quality buses, hospitals, schools and flyovers and new initiatives will take shape in the coming weeks after the new chief minister takes charge.

Aim is to protect interest of Delhiites: Atishi

After being elected to replace Kejriwal, Atish said that in the next few months, he will have two goals, namely to replace the AAP government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and provide free electricity, water, health care, education, women’s bus rides, including protecting the interests of Delhiites and preventing it from being accused of preventing elderly people from making pilgrimages. According to the new chief minister, her next goal is to ensure that Kejriwal returns to the top position after the Delhi assembly elections held in February. Atish said that she has been given a huge responsibility and she will run the government under the “guidance” of Kejriwal.
