All is not well in the Oberoi family. Two sisters are locked in a dispute over an empire worth billions of dollars. In fact, in November 2023, the owner of the Oberoi hotel empire, Prithvi Raj Singh (PRS) Oberoi, passed away. Now, the fight over the inheritance has turned into a legal dispute.

At the centre of the inheritance dispute is Anastasia Oberoi, PRS Oberoi’s daughter from his second marriage. She is opposing the division of assets, including a significant stake, in EIH Limited, the flagship company of the Oberoi Group. The battle for the inheritance is being fought between stepbrother Vikramjit Oberoi, stepsister Natasha Oberoi and cousins Arjun Oberoi and Anastasia Oberoi.

How are inheritance disputes resolved?
In fact, the Oberoi family’s dispute stems from two wills. One was from 1992, the other from 2021. The dispute became more complicated with the addition of a codicil on August 27, 2022. Anastasia says it reflects her father’s final wishes. A codicil is a legal amendment to a will that can be changed or added to without rewriting the entire document. To be valid, they say, a will must meet the same legal requirements as the original will.

Who wants to be parted with which will?
Anastasia’s half-siblings Vikramjeet, Natasha and Arjun Oberoi have demanded that the 1992 will be given priority. He claimed that the shares were held in trust for him. Meanwhile, Anastasia claimed that the 2021 will and the codicil attached to it are valid and the estate should be distributed accordingly.
