Uri, September 19: Residents of Galkot village in Uri district of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have been complaining about acute shortage of drinking water for the past few weeks.

The local delegation expressed the helplessness they felt due to the lack of drinking water supply.

“Either the water supply is very low or the water in the taps is running out. We are facing a severe water crisis in our village,” said Reyaz Ahmad, a local resident.

He said the pipes had not been replaced in more than 40 years. “They were badly corroded and in bad condition, hampering the smooth supply of water,” he added.

Another resident, Faizan Ahmad Khawaja, mentioned that although the Uri state water and energy department had installed some new pipes, much work was yet to be done.

“The contractor failed to complete the work, affecting water supply in areas like Bangam and Bilalabad,” he claimed.

Locals also claimed that employees of the hydroelectric power station rarely visited the village to check on the water supply to ensure it was flowing freely. “They don’t carry out regular maintenance,” they said.

Disgruntled residents demanded immediate restoration of drinking water supply.

They appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla and the Chief Engineer of Kashmir Water Power Department to resolve the issue on priority.

However, Jal Shakti department Uri’s executive engineer Irfan Ahmad Dar said he would look into the matter.
