Home voting for the assembly elections in all three constituencies of Poonch district began today amid strict security arrangements. Polling teams accompanied by heavy security personnel began visiting the homes of elderly and disabled voters, marking a major step towards inclusive electoral participation.
The process will continue till September 20, 2024 and involves 426 staff including polling staff, micro observers and preparatory staff. They cover 176 clusters in Surankote, Haveli and Mendhar constituencies.
The district identified 2,106 eligible voters: 625 in Surankot, 717 in Haveli and 764 in Mendhar, including senior citizens over 85 years of age and persons with disabilities. Security forces ensured the safety of polling staff and voters. Each polling team was accompanied by armed personnel and additional patrols were carried out in sensitive areas.
District Returning Officer (DEO) Vikas Kundal stressed the district’s commitment to inclusivity and safety: “Our goal is to achieve 100% voter participation in our hometowns and ensure that every eligible individual can vote safely and securely.”
Shivram, 98, from Mangnar village shared: “I had almost lost hope of voting. But when I saw the polling station staff at my door, I felt like the happiest person in the world!” He appreciated the efforts of the Election Commission of India.
Sakina Bi, a disabled resident of Kanuian Village, expressed satisfaction after casting her vote: “I never thought I would be able to vote because of my physical limitations. But today, I felt empowered. The poll workers were helpful; the voting process was smooth and dignified.”
Voting at home is conducted under the supervision of election observers and senior officials. Micro observers ensure transparency and integrity. The government maintains high security and election integrity standards.
