No doubt, the Jammu and Kashmir government has issued so many orders time and again, but thereafter no one bothers to take action against their non-compliance, blaming it on a system failure?

The biggest non-compliance is from LG/CS’s own time bound AC decision no.17/1/2022 bdtd 29th January 2022 but both the top offices did not bother to take action on their non-compliance which brings a bad name to the entire JKUT?

However, today, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired the first meeting of the UT-level Committee on Standardization and Quality Control, the local chapter of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is mandated to maintain the highest standards in goods and services, which is crucial for building a strong ‘quality ecosystem’ across the country.

The meeting was attended by Director General, North Zone, Bureau of Indian Industry and Security (BIS), Secretary, Commissioner of Industries and Commerce, Secretary, Commissioner, FCS&CA, Deputy Commissioner, Food Safety Organisation, General Manager, NHPC, representatives of R&B, SIDCO, SICOP, Kashmir/Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Protection Organisation (an NGO) and other officials concerned.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Secretary asked the concerned organisations to conduct frequent inspections of all business establishments dealing with such products and services that fall within the ambit of standardisation regulations.

He stressed that the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Department should work towards setting up district level units to protect consumer rights as per the national practice.

Dulloo also urged them to create awareness about this among the masses so that they would also be familiar with the national standards recommended by the organisation for the goods and services that people get.

He further stressed on the importance of ensuring compliance with national standards to promote economic growth, improve public services and protect consumers in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

During the meeting, discussions focused on strengthening implementation of standards in various sectors in Jammu and Kashmir to promote safety, quality and consumer protection.

The committee reviewed ongoing initiatives and identified new opportunities for integration of Indian standards into Union Territory government policies, infrastructure and industries.

Sneh Lata, Deputy Director General (North) of BIS, outlined the activities of BIS and key agenda points. She provided important insights into the role of BIS in supporting national efforts and reiterated BIS’s commitment to promoting capacity building initiatives, especially in areas critical to consumer protection in UTs.

The National Level Standardization Committee plays a key role in promoting and implementing standardization across the UT by coordinating various stakeholders, ensuring overall development of the industry and sector while ensuring quality control of critical goods and services across the country.
