On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly took an important step by adopting a draft resolution proposed by Palestine, calling on Israel to end its “illegal presence” in the occupied Palestinian territories. The proposal received 124 votes in favor, with 43 countries including India abstaining from voting. Israel, the United States and 12 other countries voted against it.

Israel is isolated on the international stage after the General Assembly resolution was adopted as world leaders arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address the 193-member Assembly on September 26, the same day Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will also attend.

12 months to vacate ownership

The resolution welcomed the recommendation made by the International Court of Justice in July that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements was illegal and should be withdrawn. The International Court of Justice said this should be done “as soon as possible”. But the resolution adopted by the General Assembly set a 12-month deadline for this.

Countries calling on to import from Israel

The General Assembly resolution calls on member states to stop importing products made in Israeli settlements and prohibits the use of weapons, ammunition and related equipment in the territories occupied by Israel.

The adoption of the resolution is a victory for Palestine

The resolution not only raises the Palestinian issue again, but also calls on the international community to take stern action against the Israeli occupation. This is seen as a political victory for Palestine, while the challenges for Israel and its supporters may increase.
