The Modi cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. It will be tabled in the winter session of Parliament. While opposition leaders have opposed the proposal, parties in the NDA have supported it. Congress chief Mallikarjun Haq has questioned its practicality, while Asaduddin Owaisi has said it is a proposal to end federalism.

Congress president Haq opposed the proposal of “one nation, one election”, saying it was impractical and they (BJP) raised such issues to divert attention when elections come. It is just a diversionary issue for the BJP and it is against the constitution. It is against democracy and federalism and the country will never accept it. However, in response to Haq’s comments, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the opposition may feel internal pressure for “one nation, one election” because during the consultation process, more than 80% of people supported the proposal, especially the young people were in favor of it.

I have always been against: Owaisi

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said I have always been against ‘One State One Election’, which is a proposal that undermines federalism. It also harms democracy. Owaisi said that except PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, no one has any problem with separate elections. Owaisi said that they (PM Modi and Amit Shah) are also contesting in municipal and local body elections, which does not mean we need to hold elections simultaneously. Frequent and regular elections can improve democratic accountability.

Another dirty trick by the BJP: Derek O’Brien

On ‘one state, one election’, Rajya Sabha MP and TMC leader Derek O’Brien said it was another cheap ploy by the anti-democratic BJP. He asked why the Maharashtra elections were not announced along with those in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir? You cannot hold elections in three states simultaneously, you are talking about one state, one election. This also tells us how many constitutional amendments will be done, including reducing or increasing the tenure of state assemblies, he said.

Now, rule of vote bandits will not continue: Jitan Ram Manjhi

HAM president Jitan Ram Manjhi, a member of the BJP-led NDA alliance, supported the ‘one state, one election’ proposal. He said that every year elections are held in a state and due to the continuity of elections, the country is always in election mode. This not only affects administrative and policy decisions but also puts a huge burden on the state exchequer. ‘One state, one election’ will also provide convenience to Dalit voters. Now, the rule of voting bandits will not continue.

Mayawati says – Our stance is positive

Regarding the “one nation, one election” system, Mayawati said that under this system, the proposal to hold elections for the House of Peoples, Parliament and local bodies at the same time has been approved by the federal cabinet. Our party’s position on this is positive, but its goal must be for the benefit of the country and the people.
