Snapchat unveiled the fifth-generation Spectacles with augmented reality (AR) capabilities at the Snap Partner Summit 2024 on Tuesday. They are upgrades over the fourth-generation Spectacles, including a more immersive AR display with a pico projector, dual Snapdragon processors, and longer battery life. In addition to launching the fifth-generation Spectacles, Snapchat also unveiled artificial intelligence (AI) features, including new lenses, creative AI captions, and more features in the social media platform’s AI chatbot My AI.

Snapchat’s fifth-generation Spectacles are equipped with an AR display with a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) micro-projector. It is said that it can project vivid images indoors and outdoors, even in direct sunlight. Spectacles are equipped with Qualcomm’s dual Snapdragon processors to share the computing workload. This is said to reduce power consumption while improving heat dissipation.

The fifth-generation Spectacles can be paired with smartphones through the companion Spectacles by Snap Inc app available on the App Store. It allows users to complete the setup process, control the AR glasses, mirror their smartphone, adjust various settings such as brightness and volume, and download and view captured content.

The company says the Snap Spectacles have a battery life of about 45 minutes, compared to 30 minutes for the original Spectacles. They can be charged via USB Type-C and come with a cable. The latest AR glasses also have subtle design tweaks, such as being thicker than the fourth-generation Spectacles.

The new AR Spectacles run on Snap OS and support gestures and voice commands. The social media platform has also partnered with Open AI to enable developers to use multimodal large language models (LLM) to build lenses. They can also use the new Lens Studio 5.0 to quickly transfer projects to Spectacles.
