34 candidates withdraw from the nomination, 415 candidates still contest in 40 constituencies

On the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers for 40 assembly constituencies in the third and final phase of the upcoming 2024 Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, 34 candidates withdrew their candidacies from the offices of the Returning Officers in seven districts on Tuesday, leaving 415 candidates in the final fray for the polls.

The office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir has informed that out of a total of 449 valid nominations, 34 candidates withdrew their nominations before the deadline, which is Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

With this, only 415 validly nominated candidates are left to contest in the 40 assembly constituencies where voting will be held on October 1, 2024, in the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir state assembly elections.

Kupwara district had the highest number of candidates withdrawing their nominations, with 16; followed by Baramulla district with 6; Jammu district and Bandipora district with 4 each; Kathua district with 3; Udhampur district with 1; and no one from Samba district withdrew their nominations.

Thus, 109 candidates remain in the Jammu district to contest the final round of elections, followed by 101 candidates in Baramulla district, 59 candidates in Kupwara district, 42 candidates in Bandipora district, 37 candidates in Udhampur district, 35 candidates in Kathua district and 32 candidates remain in the Samba district to contest the final round of elections.

In Udhampur district of Jammu region, 12 candidates are in the fray in 59-Udhampur West, 9 candidates are in the fray in 60-Udhampur East, 9 candidates are in the fray in 61-Chenani, and 7 candidates are in the fray in 62-Ramnagar (SC). In Kathua district, 8 candidates are in the fray in 63-Bani, 4 candidates are in the fray in 64-Bilawal, 4 candidates are in the fray in 65-Bassoli, 8 candidates are in the fray in 66-Jathrota, 5 candidates are in the fray in 67-Katua (SC), and 6 candidates are in the fray in 68-Hiranagar.

In Samba district, seven candidates remain in the final election contest in 69-Ramgarh (SC) AC, 14 candidates in 70-Samba AC and 11 candidates remain in the contest in 71-Vijaypur AC.

In Jammu district, 9 candidates remain in the final electoral contest in 72-Bishnah (SC) AC, 11 in 73-Suchetgarh (SC) AC, 14 in 74-RS Pura – Jammu South AC, 12 in 75-Bahu AC, 9 in 76-Jammu East AC, 8 in 77-Nagrota AC, 12 in 78-Jammu West AC, 17 in 79-Jammu North AC, 6 in 80-Marh (SC) AC, 3 in 81-Akhnoor (SC) AC, and 8 in 82-Chhamb AC. Similarly in Kupwara district of Kashmir district, 8 candidates remain in the final electoral contest in 1-Karnah AC, 10 in 2-Trehgam AC, 3 in Kupwara AC, and 13 in 4-Kupwara AC.

4-Lolab district has 20 candidates; 5-Handwara district has 7 candidates; 6-Langate district has 15 candidates in the fray. In Baramulla district, 7-Sopore district has 20 candidates in the final election; 8-Rafiabad district has 12 candidates; 9-Uri district has 6 candidates; 10-Baramulla district has 25 candidates; 11-Gulmarg district has 13 candidates; 12-Wagoora-Kreeri district has 12 candidates; 13-Pattan district has 13 candidates in the fray. In Bandipora district, 14-Sonawari district has 18 candidates in the final election; 15-Bandipora district has 19 candidates; 16-Gurez (ST) district has 5 candidates in the fray.

It is worth mentioning that as of the nomination deadline of September 12, 2024, a total of 486 candidates submitted their nomination papers to the respective Returning Officers of 40 constituencies.

Of these, the nomination papers of 449 candidates were deemed valid during the review held on September 13, 2024. Now with the withdrawal of 34 candidates, there are still 415 candidates in the final election competition in the third phase.

With this, a total of 873 candidates will contest the legislative council elections in 90 ACs, including 219 candidates from 24 ACs in the first phase, 239 candidates from 26 ACs in the second phase and 415 candidates from 40 ACs in the third phase.
