India Today reporter Rohit Sharma was subjected to misconduct by Rahul Gandhi’s US team. Since then, the Congress has been moving towards its goal. In the process, Indian-American Congressman R. Khanna has expressed strong support for India Today reporter Rohit Sharma. The incident took place during Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the US, when Sharma was reporting for India Today.

In a statement shared on social media, Ro Khanna criticised the actions of Gandhi supporters, saying the physical assault and confiscation of mobile phones were a serious violation of press freedom. Khanna wrote on X: “I stand with Rohit Sharma and unequivocally support the First Amendment.”

Khanna, the Democratic representative for California’s 17th Congressional District, said, “He was an impartial journalist. Taking his phone, shoving him and deleting his recordings is immoral and a betrayal of free speech.”

Khanna’s comments were in response to Sharma’s detailed account of the incident, which he shared in an article for India Today.

Let us tell you that the dispute took place before Rahul Gandhi arrived at Dallas DFW International Airport. Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Dallas, Sharma arranged an interview with Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) President Sam Pitroda. During the interview with Pitroda, Sharma asked four questions. However, the situation turned more serious when he asked Rahul Gandhi whether he would raise the issue of attacks and killings of Hindus in Bangladesh in his discussion with US lawmakers.

A member of Rahul Gandhi’s advance team interrupted him and shouted, “Stop it! Stop it, stop the interview,” and forcibly seized Rohat Sharma’s phone. Sharma said the issue led to a scuffle during which members of Gandhi’s team seized his phone and deleted the recordings. After Sharma reported the tragic incident, Sam Pitroda called the reporter to apologize for the incident and promised to investigate the matter thoroughly.
