Black Myth: Wukong was released on PC and PS5 last month and quickly became one of the most popular games on Steam. The game has sold more than 10 million copies within three days of its release and continues to attract new players. Although developer Game Science has not yet announced future plans for the game, game industry insiders claimed last weekend that Black Myth: Wukong will launch an expansion pack next year.

Black Myth: Wukong DLC

The news comes from Shenzhen-based journalist and gaming industry analyst Daniel Camilo, who cited a “very reliable first-hand source” in a Sunday X post, claiming that Black Myth: Wukong’s DLC will be released around the 2025 Lunar New Year (January 29, 2025).

However, Camillo added that Game Science’s plans could change. “While the team has internal plans and roadmaps, game release dates are almost never set in stone,” he said.

Furthermore, the analyst said that the game has sold nearly 20 million copies, with the majority (over 70%) coming from China. He also added that the DLC may not sell as well as the main game because Black Myth: Wukong is too challenging for many casual players who bought the game when it was released. “For many consumers, DLC is simply not an interesting option,” he said in the X post.

Game Science has yet to officially confirm its plans to make an expansion pack for Black Myth: Wukong, but given the game’s success, the developer may release DLC for the game. Game Science investor Hero Games recently told Bloomberg that the developer is working on an expansion pack for Wukong, which will give it “an opportunity to make money from the game again.” While the statement hints that a paid expansion pack is in the works, it’s unclear what the size and scope of the planned DLC will be.

Black Myth: Wukong is now the second most popular game in Steam history, with a peak concurrent player count of 2,415,714, second only to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. As of this writing, over 468,000 users are playing the game on the Valve platform.

Game Science confirmed last month that its first AAA game sold more than 10 million copies in just three days after its release on August 20. Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, and is available on PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) and PS5.
