Despite India having 22 official languages, Hindi is the most widely spoken language. Around 450 million people in India speak Hindi as their primary language. Apart from this, about 120 million people speak Hindi as a second language. The Hindi language is derived from Sanskrit and its history dates back to 769 AD. It was initially spoken in the areas around Delhi. Islamic invasions took place in India between the 8th and 10th centuries and Muslim control appeared in North India. From this time onwards, Afghans, Persians and Turks adopted Old Hindi as a mixed language to communicate with the local population around Delhi. Over time, the language evolved and it adopted many words borrowed from Arabic and Persian. Today these account for about 25% of the Hindi vocabulary.
