The increase in violence in the state of Manipur is becoming a worrying situation. Ethnic violence has been going on since September 1. The government and central agencies are taking all steps to stop the violence and also intensify the protests in the valley. Meanwhile, the KSO Kuki student organization has accepted the proposal of the central agencies to reduce violence for 10 days.

KSO Home Affairs Secretary Mang Khongsai told Aaj Tak that a meeting was held between Kuki leaders and organisations with the Assam Rifles Director General, Inspector General, ADG, local Superintendent of Police and other CAPF officials at Chura Chandpur on September 7. Here the Director General of Assam Rifles proposed a 10-day ceasefire to the Kuki apex body.

Khong Sai said that Assam Rifles battalions in Manipur are being replaced by CRPF and the agencies have requested for a rapid change, to which the tribal groups have agreed. Kuki leaders present in the meeting said that DG AR said in the meeting that in 10 days KSO will come and give a message to the Kuki groups that they should not use any kind of pompi gun, AK or any weapon and should not provoke the armed Meitei.

However, the tribal group also expressed their concern about unprovoked firing by valley-based armed groups as violence and firing were witnessed in some areas even during the talks. Even as the talks are ongoing, we lost many people in Jiribam where heavy firing has taken place and is still going on, the Kuki leaders said.

The foothills and periphery areas between the valley and the hills are still unsafe. The alleged use of drones and long-range rockets has been a matter of concern for the security agencies. Security forces are conducting search operations and recovering weapons. After this, protests are also intensifying in the valley. Curfew has been imposed in the valley and the internet has also been shut down till September 15.
