A gunfight broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Khandara Top Basantgarh area of Udhampur district in Jammu province on Wednesday, according to reports. A joint team of police and army launched a cordon and search operation in the area when the encounter began.

As the security forces approached the suspected location, the terrorists opened fire, triggering the gunfight. No further details about casualties or arrests have been reported yet.

The incident comes amid a spate of terror attacks in the Jammu region in recent months, which has seen a rise in militant activity after remaining largely peaceful for over two decades. Since 2021, the Jammu division has witnessed 31 terror incidents in which 47 security personnel and 19 civilians have been killed, along with 48 terrorists killed in encounters.

In response to the increasing threats, the Jammu and Kashmir Police established 19 counter-terror units across the Union Territory on August 15.

The gunfight in Udhampur is the latest in a series of clashes between security forces and militants in the Jammu province. The security situation in the region remains tense as authorities continue their efforts to curb the resurgence of militancy.
