There was a little heavy rain, cities started drowning. Glacial lake broke. Disaster came down from the mountains. A cyclone came. The waves of the sea submerged the coastal areas. Life-giving water is wreaking havoc everywhere. Water causes havoc in the form of floods. That is why people all over the world take floods seriously. They avoid it.

There are dozens of countries in the world, not just India, where floods are a major natural disaster. They occur often. They occur every year. Now they occur even out of season. The recent case is of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Before that Mumbai and Delhi were submerged. The risk of floods is not just in India. But in the neighboring countries, America, Africa, Europe, South Asia, Nordic countries… everywhere.

Those five countries, whose half of the population lives in water…

Where do floods occur the most? Where there are large coasts, rivers, plains. In such places, most of the population will face the problem of floods. Netherlands and Bangladesh are the only two countries in the world where more than half of the population is affected by floods. About 28 percent of India’s total population, i.e. 38.98 crore people, face the problem of floods.

The Netherlands … 58.7 percent of the total population is affected by floods. That is, about 1.01 crore.
Bangladesh… 57.5 percent of the total population faces floods. That is, more than 9.44 crore people.
Vietnam… 46 percent of the total population drowns. That means more than 4.55 crore people are affected.
Egypt… 40.5% of the total population. That is, more than 3.88 crore people are affected.
Myanmar… 39.9 percent of the total population. That means more than 1.91 crore people are affected.

How do floods affect countries like Pakistan

The floods in Pakistan in June 2022 shook the entire country and the government. One-third of the country’s entire area was submerged in water. About 31 percent of Pakistan’s population, or more than 72 million people, face the problem of floods. The floods from the western region of the Himalayas submerged the low-lying areas of Pakistan.

Where there used to be drought, there are now floods

Now the world is changing. Desert cities like Dubai get flooded. India’s Rajasthan used to face drought. Now it is raining heavily there. Bihar’s West Champaran used to face floods. This time there has been almost no rain there. According to a report by IPE Global and ESRI-India, in 80 percent of Gujarat’s districts, both the quantity and intensity of rain have increased in the last two decades.

This year’s flood in Saurashtra has told the story. Earlier there were 110 districts in the country which went from drought to flood. But now there are 149 districts which face more floods than drought. 60 percent of the districts of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Assam face extreme weather events at least once a year. By 2036, more than 147 crore people of the country will be affected by such disasters.

The weather is hard to predict

All the extreme disasters that will occur from 1973 to 2023 have been studied in this new report. The surprising thing is that whether it is the floods in Delhi, Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan, landslides in Wayanad or the skin-melting heat this time, scientists and experts cannot predict their occurrence because their intensity and quantity increases suddenly. 90 percent districts of Assam, 87 percent districts of Bihar, 75 percent districts of Odisha and 93 percent districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana can be troubled by extreme floods anytime.
