The Northern Railway has begun the process of accepting the resignations of wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia. Railway sources told PTI that both the players are expected to be relieved “as soon as possible”.

Both Poonia and Phogat have recently joined the Congress. Vinesh has been made the Congress candidate from Julana assembly constituency in Haryana. A senior railway official said, “There is a provision for a railway employee to serve a notice period of three months after resigning, but this rule will not come in the way of relieving the two players as we have decided to relax the criteria in their cases.”

Both the players will be relieved soon

Railway sources said the two players would be “most likely relieved today or as soon as possible.” The Northern Railway (NR) had earlier issued them show-cause notices after they met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to join his party.

These speculations were being made

The Northern Railway had said that the show cause notice was part of the service norms as they were government employees. After the notice, both of them resigned from the railways. There was speculation that Phogat would not be able to contest the elections due to the three-month notice period rule.

According to the election rules, she has to be officially relieved from the railways to contest the elections. A Northern Railway official said that now since the railways has started the process of accepting Vinesh Phogat’s resignation, there is no obstacle in her contesting the elections.
