The central government has taken a big step to reduce the rising prices of onion. The government is going to sell onions at the rate of Rs 35 per kg from today (September 5). NAFED and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) will sell onions at this price from today.

According to Aaj Tak’s associate Kisan Tak, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Prahlad Joshi will flag off onion vans of NAFED and NCCF from Krishi Bhawan in Delhi today. Talking about Delhi-NCR, NCCF will sell cheap onions at 38 places here.

Farmers may have to bear losses

This decision of the government is important in many ways. The government has taken this step to provide relief to the common man, but this will reduce the price of onion in the market, due to which farmers may have to bear the direct loss.

There has been a setback in the Lok Sabha elections

Assembly elections are very near in Maharashtra, the largest onion producing state. At the same time, BJP and its allies have already suffered a major political setback on the issue of onion prices in the Lok Sabha elections. In such a situation, it remains to be seen what impact this decision of the government has on the Maharashtra elections?

‘Cause of trouble for farmers’

According to Bharat Dighole, chairman of Maharashtra’s onion producers’ organization, ‘By increasing the buffer stock, the government gives the message that it is buying onions for the benefit of farmers. But in reality, this stock itself becomes a cause of trouble for the farmers. When the prices start increasing, the government reduces the prices by taking out this stock. The government is going to do the same now. It seems that the central government has not learned any lesson from the farmers’ anger over onion prices seen during the Lok Sabha elections.’
