Vasundhara Raje was a strong contender for the post of Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Rajasthan. The party first announced to contest the elections without a CM face and then after the victory, handed over the command of the government to Bhajanlal Sharma. About 10 months ago, the proposal of Bhajanlal Sharma’s name for the post of Chief Minister was also made by Vasundhara Raje in the legislative party meeting. Since then, there has been a round of speculations about Vasundhara’s political career, but the former CM remained silent since the elections. Vasundhara has suddenly become vocal now.

During the felicitation ceremony organized in honour of Sikkim Governor Om Mathur, she said, “No matter how much heights Om Mathur has reached, his feet are always on the ground. That is why he has many admirers. Otherwise many people consider themselves goldsmiths when they get a brass clove.” This comment of Vasundhara Raje has given birth to a new discussion. Some are linking this comment of Vasundhara to CM Bhajan while others are linking it to Madan Rathore, who was the leader of opposition in the assembly.

Only Vasundhara knows for whom this comment was made but there is also a discussion about why Vasundhara Raje, who was silent since the elections, has suddenly become vocal, why is she showing her attitude? Political analyst Amitabh Tiwari said that Vasundhara Raje used to be the power center of Rajasthan BJP but in the last one year, the circumstances have taken such a turn that she has been marginalized. Call it the effect of change of power or what, the leaders and MLAs who were earlier seen circling Vasundhara are now keeping their distance. This comment of hers shows disappointment about the change in the behavior of the leaders themselves. If not in the government, then in the organization or some other responsibility, if the queen is showing her attitude now, then behind it is an attempt to regain her lost political glory.

Age factor- Another aspect is that Vasundhara Raje is 71 years old. BJP’s undeclared policy has been to avoid giving tickets to leaders above 75 years of age and put them in the Margdarshak Mandal. By the next election in Rajasthan, Vasundhara will have reached this age limit of retirement from active politics in BJP. Vasundhara Raje now faces the challenge of keeping herself relevant in active politics in the future as well.

Setting up the son- Vasundhara Raje Scindia’s son Dushyant is also in politics. Dushyant is a fourth time MP from Jhalawar-Baran seat. When BJP put forward the name of Bhajanlal Sharma for CM and Vasundhara herself proposed it, it was said that the party must have given her some big assurance regarding Dushyant. Vasundhara’s political temperament has also not been such that it can be assumed that she will accept every decision of the high command like a dedicated soldier. After the Lok Sabha elections, Modi government was formed for the third consecutive time at the center but Dushyant remained empty handed. Dushyant, a fourth time MLA, was also deprived of a place in the Modi cabinet.

Dushyant’s ticket should be confirmed- Another factor behind Vasundhara Raje Scindia’s attitude could be that Dushyant’s ticket is confirmed in the Lok Sabha elections. Dushyant is a four-time MP and now that the party has taken big steps towards coming out of Vasundhara’s shadow, the former CM must also be worried that the party may cut her son’s ticket citing the anti-incumbency of four times. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, BJP had cut the ticket of Varun Gandhi, son of former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and MP from UP’s Pilibhit seat.

Hope seen in Lok Sabha election results- BJP, which had crossed the majority mark on its own in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, could win only 240 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections. BJP, which had a clean sweep by winning all 25 seats in Rajasthan in both the elections, had to face defeat on 11 seats this time. The party’s weak performance in the state seats in the Lok Sabha elections is also being described as an opportunity in disaster for Vasundhara.
