Protests are going on all over the world after the brutality against the trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Medical College. The CBI investigation is also going on at a fast pace. At the same time, new revelations are also being made about the case. Meanwhile, it has come to light that after this heinous crime and the vandalism in RG Medical College, most of the female doctors have left the hostel and have either gone home with their belongings or have shifted to another place.

In fact, the vandalism caused by unknown people by entering the medical college on the night of 15 August was not limited to the emergency ward of the hospital. That day, these unknown people also entered the girls’ hostels of this hospital and created a ruckus. It is alleged that they intimidated the female resident doctors living in the hostel and even threatened to rape them. After this, most of the lady doctors living in the hostel left the hostel due to fear. Even though CISF has been deployed outside the hospital and hostels after the order of the Supreme Court, but the staff who have left from here are still not ready to come back due to fear.

‘Nursing staff threatened with rape’

While talking to Aaj Tak, a female resident doctor said that the mob had attacked the hospital that day. Their target was also the hostel and they went to the nursing hostel and threatened to rape our nursing staff. After this, everyone living in the hostel got scared and everyone went to their homes the next morning. As the situation is now, very few women are left in this campus. To do their duty, female doctors will have to return to the hostel and campus.

He said that the Supreme Court is telling us to go back to duty. But how will we go, no one is left here. Everyone has gone to their homes out of fear. Their parents are also scared. Because of this we do not have a working force. Even though CISF has been engaged in security, we thank the Supreme Court for this. But even after this we do not have the courage to work here considering it a safe environment.

‘Saved life by hiding under toilet and bed’

Recalling the dreadful night of the attack, the resident doctor said that on that day we hid in the toilet and under the bed. People ran wherever they could find space to save their lives. We could not sleep all night due to fear and could not get out. We called our family members and waited for them to come and take us safely from here. The next day everyone went to their respective homes. Now there is an atmosphere of great fear. We are afraid that goons may attack here again and the second fear is that the incident that has happened can happen to us too. Who will assure us of safety from this?

“We were very scared that night.”

A final year female student of RG Kar Medical College, who lives in the hostel, told Aaj Tak that many people left the hostel for their homes. I too had gone to my home. I have just returned. That night (14 August) we had a rally. We were ready to leave for it. But there was a traffic jam on the roads outside, so our seniors said that we will hold the rally in the hospital premises itself. So we were holding the rally when some seniors came and said that there has been a mob attack, you guys should go to the hostel. We were very scared. That night was very scary. The very next day we went to our homes fearing insecurity. There was police here, but they were not doing anything.

80 percent of students and doctors left the hostel

The student said that about 80 percent of the students and doctors living in the hostels have gone to their respective homes. Even though CISF has been deployed, there is still no assurance of security because it is not known how long CISF will stay here. We want the CCTV cameras to work properly here and they should be installed where they are not installed. There are no CCTV cameras on every floor in the hostel as well. Security personnel should be deployed for 24 hours for the security of the hospital. We want the accused to be given the harshest punishment.

What happened on the night of 14th August?

Let us tell you that on 14th August, left organizations had called for a protest at 12 midnight. In this sequence, the workers were protesting. Then unknown people broke the barricades. The policemen who were standing near the barricades went inside the hospital to save their lives. The angry mob broke the protest site. There was a camp inside the medical college in which students were protesting. The mob also targeted that place. Hardly anything was left inside the emergency ward. Everything from windows, beds to all medical equipment was destroyed. Even the police barracks built inside the hospital were broken by the mob.

First slogans were raised outside the hospital demanding justice and then within no time thousands of people gathered. The emergency building where the lady doctor was raped and murdered was also attacked. The building in which evidence of the crime was hidden in every corner was destroyed late at night. The police resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the violent mob. During this some policemen were also injured.
