In case of divorce in the relationship between husband and wife, the husband gives her alimony i.e. monthly expenses. This law exists for housewife women in many countries including India. Such laws have been made for financial assistance to women who are separated from the relationship due to some reason and their children. But many times people have been seen taking wrong advantage of these laws. Recently, a similar case came to light, a video of whose legal action is viral on social media.
In the video, a divorce case is going on in the court and the lawyer of the woman’s side demands an alimony of 6 lakh 16 thousand rupees per month on behalf of the woman. He says that his client will need 15 thousand rupees every month for shoes, clothes, bangles, 60 thousand rupees for food and 4 to 5 lakh rupees for physiotherapy and other medical expenses.
On this, the woman judge gives a befitting reply and says- ‘If a woman has to spend more than 6 lakhs on herself in a month, then she should know how to earn. You are telling the court that a woman will need 6,16,300 rupees every month. There is no child and no other responsibility. Who spends so much money on herself? If you have to spend so much, then do not ask your husband, earn it yourself.’
The judge said- ‘If there is a dispute with the wife, will the husband be punished like this? The law does not say this. This is exploitation.’
The judge further told the lawyer- You should demand a reasonable amount or else the argument will be dismissed. This hearing took place on 20 August 2024. Earlier on September 30, 2023, the Additional Chief Justice, Family Court, Bengaluru had ordered the woman’s husband to pay her a monthly alimony of Rs 50,000. On this, the woman had approached the High Court requesting to increase the interim alimony amount.
