Accident due to climate change
In a sad reminder of the growing impact of climate change, the landslides that occurred in Kerala’s Wayanad district on July 30, 2024, were made more severe due to human-induced climate change, according to a recent study by the World Weather Attribution Group.
More than 200 people lost their lives in the landslide. There was 10 percent more rainfall due to climate change.
The study states that the one-day monsoon rain in Wayanad has become very heavy and the rain on July 30 was the third heaviest in the region.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said that the area received 572 mm of rain in just 48 hours, which was more than double the predicted amount, causing catastrophic landslides.
The World Weather Attribution Group has warned that if global temperatures rise by 2 degrees Celsius, one-day rainfall events in Kerala could increase by an additional 4 percent, increasing the likelihood of landslides in the future.
