Sandeep Ghosh is the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This is the same hospital in Kolkata where brutality was meted out to a working trainee doctor. Born and brought up in Bangaon, located about 80 km from Kolkata, Dr. Ghosh completed his studies from Bangaon High School in 1989. Later, he completed his medical education from RG Kar Medical College and obtained his graduate degree in 1994. His early education and professional journey were quite good. However, Dr. Ghosh’s later career is full of controversies.
A professor associated with another hospital in Bengal said off the record, ‘Ghosh was 16th in the list of principals to be interviewed for this post. Overnight he reached the top of the list and became the principal in 2021.
‘People change after getting power’
Dr Bidisha Dutta, who was Sandeep Ghosh’s batch mate, said, ‘He is an alumnus of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He was in the batch of 1989 and passed out in 1994. He was not our friend when we were in college but we never saw him as a naughty student. But maybe that has changed after getting power. Many people change after getting power. Dr Dutta said, ‘Sandeep Ghosh was appointed as the MSVP of the National Medical College for the first time.’
Transfer happened twice, order had to be withdrawn both times
Several complaints have been sent to the state health department against Ghosh. An inquiry was also set up. The result was that Ghosh was transferred twice and both times he was successful in getting the transfer order overturned. Reportedly, a group of his students and interns had also protested in support of Ghosh.

During his tenure as Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Ghosh was often accused of serious misconduct. The allegations range from serious matters ranging from financial corruption to extortion of funds through various means such as illegal commission and tender manipulation to illegal use of dead bodies kept for post-mortem.
Sources say that Ghosh has been accused of various corruption charges ranging from extortion to illegal sale of medicines and human rights violations. Many times the college staff wrote letters to the health department regarding this but no action was taken.
‘She’s some mafia type’
Regarding Sandeep Ghosh, Dr Akhtar Ali, professor and former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, said, ‘He is a very corrupt man. He used to fail students and take 20% commission. In the matter of tender, he used to collect money from every work of the medical college and hospital and used to supply liquor to the students in the guest house. He is like a mafia, very powerful. I had complained against them in 2023 but then I was transferred after that.
Dr. Akhtar Ali said, ‘I had complained against him in 2023… His resignation [रेप और हत्या के बाद] It was a show. Within 8 hours he was made the Principal of Calcutta National Medical College.

The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor sparked widespread outrage among medical students and staff, leading to demands for Ghosh’s resignation. The incident has exposed a pattern of alleged corruption and irregularities, with former colleagues and employees accusing Ghosh of running a ‘mafia-like’ operation within the institute.
CBI asked questions and answers for 13 hours
Claims of deliberately failing students and misuse of institutional resources have tarnished his reputation. CBI is investigating the RG tax case. On Saturday, CBI interrogated Dr. Ghosh for about 13 hours.

May 31, 2023- An order was issued to transfer Dr. Ghosh as Professor of the Department of Orthopedics in Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. However, Ghosh got the order reversed.
September 12, 2023- An order was once again issued to transfer Dr. Ghosh to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital as Professor of the Department of Orthopedics. Once again Ghosh got that order reversed.
August 12, 2024- Ghosh was transferred as the Principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. But due to opposition from students he could not take charge in CNMC. Later the High Court ordered the state government to send him on leave. CBI is investigating his role in the case.
