Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test fired long range glide bomb Gaurav. The bomb was dropped from Sukhoi-30 MKI of the Indian Air Force on the target standing on Long Wheeler Island near the coast of Odisha. The bomb hit the target very accurately and completely destroyed the target.

This bomb has been designed by DRDO. But the production is being done by Adani Defense and Aerospace. This 1000 kg bomb was also successfully tested last year.

Let us know the power, range and lethality of this bomb.

The Indian Air Force needed a smart bomb that could destroy enemy targets while navigating and gliding on its own. DRDO helped in this. Scientists designed two types of bombs. After the design, the responsibility of making this bomb was given to Adani Defense And Aerospace.

The company manufactured both the bombs. The first to glide through a wing was the Gaurav Long Range Glide Bomb (LRGB). The second one is Gautham without wings. Both of these are precision guided weapons.

Where fighter jets cannot go, the bomb will reach by swimming.

These will generally be used in anti-aircraft defense to destroy targets out of range. That is, where fighter jets, missiles or drones could not go. There can be an attack with this bomb.

This reduces the chances of survival and collateral damage of your fighter jet. Gaurav is a long range glide bomb with a 1000 KG wing. At the same time, Gautham is a 550 KG wingless bomb. The length of both is 4 meters. The diameter is 0.62 meters.

It contains dangerous explosives, the target will be blown to smithereens

Both Gaurav and Gautham bombs are equipped with CL-20 i.e. fragmentation and cluster munition. It produces proximity fuse as soon as it contacts the target. The explosive explodes. Gaurav has a gliding range of 100 KM. Gautham can glide 30 KM without wings.

Inertial navigation system is installed in both the bombs. Which reaches the target through GPS and navigation satellite guidance system. It can be deployed on Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet. Gaurav was successfully tested from Sukhoi fighter jet in Balasore in October last year. Earlier in 2014 it was successfully tested. Currently the upgraded range of both is 50 to 150 km.
