Under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), many changes are going to happen in India’s education system. One of the major changes is regarding board exams. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had informed about conducting board exams twice a year. Now it is going to start. Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said on Saturday that the state school education board will conduct two class 10 examinations from next year.

Sangma told news agency PTI that the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will conduct two Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination (SSLC) examinations in the year 2025. He said that this proposal to amend the Meghalaya Board of School Education Regulation for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination 2011 has been approved by the state cabinet on Friday.

Board exams will be held twice in February and May
This step of conducting two SSLC board exams is to give a second chance to those students who could not pass the board exams. Sangma said, “From the beginning of 2025, MBOSE will conduct two SSLC board examinations every year. The first examination will be held in February or early March and the second examination will be held within one to two months for students who fail in all or some subjects. You will get a chance to appear for the examination, which will be held in May.” The Education Minister said that the move is in line with the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and is designed in the interest of students by reducing the time lost between attempts.

From the year 2026, you will have to pass not 5 but 6 subjects.
The Cabinet also approved the decision to remove the optional paper or ‘best of five papers’ from the 2026-2027 academic years, which means all students from 2026-2027 will have to pass all six subjects in the board exams. The Cabinet also approved the service rules for the Meghalaya Public Schools Service Rules, Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules, 2024 and the Farmers Empowerment Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Let us tell you that two plans have been made for the board examinations to be held in the year 2025-26. The first plan includes board exams twice a year, the students with better results will be considered final. In the second plan, board examinations are to be conducted semester wise. That means students will be covered with the entire syllabus in 6-6 months and there will be semester wise examination. Board exams will be held once in February and second time in April.
