Vinesh Phogat’s dream of reaching the wrestling final in Olympics for the first time was shattered by just ‘100 grams’. Vinesh Phogat was the first Indian wrestler to reach the wrestling final in the Olympics. But when his weight was measured before the final match, it turned out to be 100 grams more than the prescribed limit. After this he was disqualified.

Vinesh Phogat was playing in the 50 kg category for the first time. He had also won three matches a day before the final. But after the match his weight increased by 2 kg 700 grams. She also lost weight by working hard all night, but missed it by 100 grams.

Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from Paris Olympics due to being overweight, her dream of winning ‘Gold’ was also shattered. Not only this, if there was a match and she lost, she would still have got ‘silver’.

However, Vinesh Phogat has appealed against the disqualification. They have demanded that they should be given a joint silver medal. A decision on this is expected on Friday.

But amidst all this, politics has also intensified. There is also a demand to send Vinesh Phogat to Rajya Sabha. Former Haryana CM Bhupinder Hooda and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee have demanded to send Vinesh to Rajya Sabha.

What did Bhupinder Hooda and Banerjee say?

Former Haryana CM Bhupinder Hooda had said that if Congress had majority in the state, it would have sent Vinesh Phogat to Rajya Sabha. Talking to the news agency, he said, currently one seat is vacant in Haryana, if I had majority, I would have sent him to Rajya Sabha.

At the same time, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said that Vinesh Phogat should either be honored with Bharat Ratna or she should be sent to Rajya Sabha.

However, Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat has called it a political stunt. He said, today Bhupinder Hooda is talking about sending Vinesh to Rajya Sabha, but when his government was in power, why did he not send Geeta. He claimed that there was Hooda government at that time. Geeta and Babita were to be made DSP, but Hooda Saheb discriminated and made Geeta Inspector and Babita as Sub-Inspector. We filed a case and the matter was resolved through the court.

But can Vinesh become a Rajya Sabha member?

Bhupinder Hooda says that there is a vacancy in Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana, if Congress had majority then Vinesh would have been sent.

Actually, Rajya Sabha seat has become vacant after Deepender Singh Hooda went to Lok Sabha in Haryana. His tenure was till 9 April 2026. Notification for the elections will be issued on August 14, while the last date for filing nominations is August 21.

In such a situation, there will be a problem with Vinesh Phogat regarding age. Actually, a person can become a Rajya Sabha member only if his age is 30 years or more. Vinesh Phogat is currently 29 years old. She will complete 30 years on 25th August. That is, this time she cannot file nomination for Rajya Sabha even if she wants to. That means, even if any party wants to send her to Rajya Sabha from Haryana, Vinesh will miss only 4 days.

Can the President nominate?

The President can nominate 12 out of 245 members of the Rajya Sabha. Article 80(3) of the Constitution gives them this right. The members nominated by the President should have experience in fields like literature, science, art.

Out of the 12 members nominated by the President, the tenure of four has ended on July 13. These include Ram Shakal, Rakesh Sinha, Sonal Mansingh and Mahesh Jethmalani. There is time for the tenure of the remaining eight members to end.

That means, currently President Draupadi Murmu can nominate four members. The President can nominate someone on the advice of the Central Government. In such a situation Vinesh Phogat can be nominated.
