Sheikh Hasina government bans Jamaat-e-Islami

This step was taken after several weeks of violent protests in Bangladesh. It is being said that after this action of the government, these organizations have come out on the streets against the Sheikh Hasina government.

While banning Jamaat-e-Islami under the anti-terrorism law, the government had accused the fundamentalist party of taking advantage of the movement and tricking people into violence. The decision to ban Jamaat-e-Islami was taken in a meeting of a coalition of 14 parties led by Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League. During this meeting, allegedly the allied parties had also appealed to ban the radical party.

What is Jamaat-e-Islami?

Jamaat-e-Islami is a political party, which is considered fundamentalist in Bangladesh. This political party is included in the supporting parties of former PM Khaleda Zia. The latest decision to ban Jamaat comes 50 years after the initial ban in 1972 for ‘misusing religion for political purposes’.

Jamaat-e-Islami was founded in 1941 in undivided India under British rule. In 2018, following the decision of Bangladesh High Court, the Election Commission had canceled the registration of Jamaat. After this, Jamaat became ineligible from contesting elections.

Jamaat-e-Islami involved in attacks on Hindus

Human rights organization Amnesty International has said in one of its reports that Jamaat-e-Islami and student camps have been continuously targeting Hindus in Bangladesh. NGOs working in Bangladesh estimate that from 2013 to 2022, there have been 3600 attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Jamaat-e-Islami has played a role in many incidents.
