A man from Noida in Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for stealing a 50-million-year-old fossil from a Geological Survey of India (GSI) stall. In fact, GSI has also set up a stall at the 2024 India International Trade Expo in the capital Delhi. Here, a 50-million-year-old “gastropod fossil” was kept at the Geological Survey of India’s stall, but was later stolen. Subsequently, the police investigated and arrested the suspect.

According to police reports, on November 21, a fossil theft occurred in Hall 4 of the “Mineral Museum” of the Ministry of Public Security. The stolen “fossil gastropod” is the preserved remains of an ancient snail. The organization is also India’s leading provider of basic geoscience information to government, industry and the public.
This is how the defendant was arrested
Delhi Police provided information about the incident on Tuesday. Police said in a statement that more than 100 CCTV footage from the incident site and surrounding stalls, pavilions and halls were scrutinized to identify the accused who stole the 50-million-year-old fossil. Following this, the suspect was identified and based on the information, the police conducted a raid and arrested the suspect from Sector 22, Noida. The accused was identified as 49-year-old Manoj Kumar Mishra.
Fossils recovered from defendant
During interrogation by the police, the accused Manoj Kumar Mishra admitted to the theft. Police also recovered stolen gastropod fossils from the accused. The accused is an employee of a five-star hotel in Noida. The defendant had a keen interest in various art forms and therefore continued to visit art fairs. (input language)
