415 candidates contest in 40 constituencies

Jammu, September 17: On the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers in the third and final phase for the upcoming 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, 34 candidates from seven districts withdrew their candidacies from the respective Returning Officers’ offices on Tuesday, leaving 415 candidates in the final fray of the elections.

The office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir said that out of a total of 449 valid nominations, 34 candidates withdrew their nominations before the deadline (September 17, 2024).

This leaves only 415 validly nominated candidates to contest in the 40 constituencies in the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections to be held on October 1, 2024.

The 16 candidates who received the most votes in Kupwara district withdrew their nominations, followed by 6 candidates in Baramulla district, 4 candidates each in Jammu and Bandipora districts, 3 candidates in Kathua district, 1 candidate in Udhampur district and no candidate in Samba district withdrew their nominations.

Thus, 109 candidates remain in the Jammu district to contest the final round of elections, followed by 101 candidates in Baramulla district, 59 candidates in Kupwara district, 42 candidates in Bandipora district, 37 candidates in Udhampur district, 35 candidates in Kathua district and 32 candidates remain in the Samba district to contest the final round of elections.

In Udhampur district, 12 candidates are still in the final fray in 59-Udhampur West, 9 candidates in 60-Udhampur East, 9 candidates in 61-Chinani and 7 candidates in 62-Ramnagar (SC).

In Kathua district, eight candidates are still in the fray in 63-Bani, four in 64-Bilawal, four in 65-Bassoli, eight in 66-Jasrota, five in 67-Katua (SC), and six in 68-Hiranagar.

In Samba district, 7 candidates are still in the fray in 69-Ramgarh (SC) district, 14 candidates in 70-Samba district and 11 candidates in 71-Vijaypur district.

In Jammu district, 72-Bishna (SC) has 9 candidates in the final election fray, 73-Suchetgarh (SC) has 11 candidates, 74-RS Pura- Jammu South has 14 candidates, 75-Bahu has 12 candidates, 76-Jammu East has 9 candidates, 77-Nagrotta has 8 candidates, 78-Jammu West has 12 candidates, 79-Jammu North has 17 candidates, 80-Mal (SC) has 6 candidates, 81-Akhnoor (SC) has 3 candidates and 82-Champur has 8 candidates.

In Kupwara district, 1-Kalna district has 8 candidates in the final election contest, 2-Tregam district has 10 candidates, 3-Kupwara district has 8 candidates, 4-Lorapur district has 11 candidates, 5-Handwara district has 7 candidates, and 6-Rangat district has 15 candidates.

In Baramulla, 20 candidates remain in the final fray in 7-Sopore; 12 in 8-Rafiabad; 6 in 9-Uri AC; 25 in 10-Barrel; 13 in 11-Gulmarg; 12 in 12-Wagora-Creeri and 13 in 13-Patan.

In Bandipora district, 18 candidates are still in the fray in 14-Sonavari district, 19 candidates in 15-Bandipora district and 5 candidates in 16-Gurezi (ST) district.

As of the nomination deadline on September 12, 2024, a total of 486 candidates submitted their nomination papers to the Returning Officers of 40 constituencies.

Of these, the nomination documents of 449 candidates were deemed valid during the review on September 13, 2024.

So far, 34 candidates have withdrawn, leaving 415 candidates in the final round of the third phase of election competition.

With this, a total of 873 candidates will contest the assembly elections in 90 constituencies, including 219 candidates from 24 constituencies in the first phase, 239 candidates from 26 constituencies in the second phase and 415 candidates from 40 ACs in the third phase.
