According to the Indian Meteorological Department, this year in August there has been more extreme rainfall than last year. That is, extreme rainfall. Last year, such a situation arose on 17 out of 31 days of August. But this year, there has been excessive rainfall on 22 out of 31 days. That is, there has been an increase of 30 percent in the number of days with heavy rainfall.

From August 1 to August 31, 2024, there were 22 such days in which there was heavy rainfall. Whereas last year there were only 17 days. In the month of August, there was extraordinary rainfall at three stations in Gujarat, Tripura and Rajasthan.

These are those three days… when the highest rainfall was recorded at three stations in three states

10 August 2024… In Rajasthan, 380 mm of rain fell in 24 hours. Whereas the average is 329 mm.
21 August 2024… Bagafa station in South Tripura received 490 mm rainfall.
27 August 2024… 430 mm of rain was recorded at Khambhalia station in Dwarka, Gujarat, and 380 mm of rain was recorded at Jamnagar station.

What is called extreme rainfall… where in the country was such weather observed this time?

According to the Meteorological Department, when an area receives 204.5 mm or more rainfall in 24 hours, it is considered Extremely Heavy Rainfall. Whereas when the daily rainfall at a station approaches the highest recorded amount for that month or season, it is called Exceptionally Heavy Rainfall. Extremely heavy rainfall in August is not a new phenomenon. But this time it was spread over a very large area. It also brought more destruction.

Gujarat, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Telangana and Tripura were the most affected this time

DTE analysed the data of the Meteorological Department. In which extreme rainfall was divided into three levels. Stations where 210 to 300 mm, 301 to 400 mm and more than 400 mm of rain fell in 24 hours. This investigation revealed that there are 117 weather stations in 14 states and union territories of the country, where 210 to 300 mm of rain fell in 24 hours. Gujarat, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Telangana and Tripura are the five states where 310 to 400 mm of rain was recorded at 34 weather stations.

This time Gujarat was in the worst condition…

In the month of August, extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at 57 weather stations in 17 districts of Gujarat. This happened on seven days. August 4, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29. Out of these, 32 percent stations recorded 301 to 400 mm of rain. The most dangerous rain occurred on August 26. 28 stations of Gujarat were affected by this. The same situation was seen at 21 stations in eight districts of Telangana. Out of these, 16 stations recorded 210 to 300 mm of rain on August 31. Extremely heavy rainfall was recorded for four days at 13 stations in eight districts of Tripura. Due to which landslides and floods occurred at many places.
