2 Iranian agents, 3 rooms, bombs fitted in a few minutes… This is how Mossad conducted the operation to kill Hamas chief

Israeli intelligence agency Mossad had given the task to Iranian security agents to plant explosives in the building in Tehran where Hamas political leader Ismail Haniya was staying. According to The Telegraph, there was initially a plan to kill Haniya in May when he had come to Tehran for the funeral of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

According to two Iranian officials who spoke to The Telegraph, the operation was canceled due to the large gathering of people because there was little hope of success. After this the timing of operation was changed.

Two agents working under the direction of Mossad planted explosive devices in three different rooms of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) guesthouse in northern Tehran. This place was chosen strategically because there was every possibility that Hania would stay here.

How does Mossad work?
With an annual budget of $3 billion (about Rs 2.5 trillion) and a staff of 7,000, the Mossad is the second largest spy agency in the West after the CIA. Mossad has many departments, but no one knows much about its internal structure. It not only has a network of informants and agents inside Palestinian terrorist groups, but also has agents in hostile countries such as Lebanon, Syria and Iran. The huge spy network of the intelligence agency provides it with in-depth information about the activities of the heads of terrorist organizations. This is why they carry out precision killings when necessary.

Operation to eliminate Hania
According to The Telegraph, surveillance footage available with Iranian authorities shows agents moving around secretly. It is seen in the footage that agents enter several rooms and come out within a few minutes. After installing the device, they secretly left Iran, but they had a source inside the country. At 2 am on Wednesday, operatives remotely detonated the explosives planted in the room where Haniya was staying, killing him.

The killing has been confirmed by IRGC officials, who believe that Mossad had recruited agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi security unit, which is responsible for protecting top-ranking leaders and officials inside and outside the country.

“This is a humiliation for Iran and a huge security lapse,” an IRGC official told The Telegraph. The official said that a special working group has been formed to prepare a strategy regarding this lapse.

potential consequences
Following this lapse, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is considering its options for retaliation. A direct attack on Tel Aviv could reportedly be launched, potentially involving Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies. Apart from this, Iran can also try other options to attack Israel.
